Holly Goodridge explores the ‘blockings’ of living as a contemporary artist with autism and dyslexia. The approach to art applications endures a deterrence within abilities, casting an invisible wall evoking feelings of stupidity and alienation. Driven by these conscious notions, she provides feedback in isolation, continuously into creations, acting as a bridge to other paradigms.
The acrylic-based works on free-form canvas play as a form of ‘blocking’, an entwined act of stimming and escapism. By creating symbolic visual gateways
through bold contrasting colours, she connects to a state of otherness through spiritual form, bridging a gap between the neurotypical observer and herself.
For tens of thousands of years, the First Peoples of this land have nurtured rich, continuous cultural and artistic practices. Some of the earliest weavers of fibre, land, story, and community.
I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which I live, learn, create and rest, the Boonwurrung and Woiwurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nations.
I pay my respects to their Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all First Nations people reading this.
Sovereignty was never ceded. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
