THE SHAPE OF REST

    Mailbox, 2025

The Shape of Rest presents a series of intimate boxes that act as portals into neurodivergent ways of being. Drawing on hand-knitted fabric rectangles adorned in plastic charms, and embroidery, each box becomes a container for sensory experience, care, and resistance. Each work is the size of a swatch, a small test square knitters create to check if a garment will fit. In knitting culture, swatches embody unseen labour, often discarded despite their necessity. Here they stand as metaphors for the invisible labour of autism: the constant testing, adjusting, and re-calibrating of life.

At the same time, their forms resemble miniature bedspreads, evoking the shape of rest and the radical potential of softness, slowness, and pause. Grounded in lived experience, the work transforms knitting and crochet into acts of regulation, testimony, and visibility. These boxes become sanctuaries where softness is strategy: a method of reclaiming the body, expressing identity, and imagining otherwise.

For tens of thousands of years, the First Peoples of this land have nurtured rich, continuous cultural and artistic practices. Some of the earliest weavers of fibre, land, story, and community.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which I live, learn, create and rest, the Boonwurrung and Woiwurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nations.

I pay my respects to their Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all First Nations people reading this.

Sovereignty was never ceded. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
